Veras Vozes Dos Artistas – Seeing Artist’s Voices

From 18 October – 20 December 2019 Langlands & Bell are participating in “Veras Vozes Dos Artistas – Seeing Artist’s Voices” #2  an exhibition curated by Miguel von Hafe Perez for Saco Azul Cultural Association. The exhibition features artist designed flags installed on institutional buildings in Porto, Portugal.

Langlands & Bell’s black and white flag titled “The Past is Never Dead…” shows “footprint” plans of three Portuguese “Slave Castles” from the Gold Coast of Ghana: Fortaleza de Sao Jorge da Mina, Elmina, 1482; Forte de Santo Antonio, Axim, 1515; Forte de Sao Sebastiao, Shama, 1525; The three castles are the earliest European built structures in Africa south of the Sahara, and all can be visited today.

2019 marks the 400 anniversary of the beginning of the Atlantic Slave Trade, the largest forced migration in history.
