Taking place on the first Thursday of each month in the Bar, the Socials are hosted by prominent cultural figures, activists, authors and others to bring you a varied and engaging evening.

April’s Social will be hosted by the prominent artist duo Langlands & Bell. You can look forward to a conversation between them and Denis Maksimov Foyle Curator of Exhibitions and Public Programmes about their 50-year-long career exploring the complex web of relationships linking people, architecture, and the coded systems of communication and exchange we use to negotiate a fast-changing technological world.

Ben Langlands & Nikki Bell began their collaboration in 1978 while still at art school in London. They are based in London and Kent and have exhibited internationally since the early 1980s. Via film, video and interactive digital media to sculpture, installation, and full-scale architecture their art examines human relations from the personal to the political, by exploring the structures we inhabit and the networks of communication and exchange that surround us.

Langlands & Bell were awarded a BAFTA and shortlisted for the Turner Prize in 2003/4 for The House of Osama bin Laden. Recent solo exhibitions include, Internet Giants: Masters of the Universe, Ikon Gallery, Birmingham, UK, 2018; Langlands & Bell: Degrees of Truth, Sir John Soane’s Museum, London, UK, 2020–21; Curators Signatures, CCA, Kitakyushu, Japan 2020–21; The Past is Never Dead… Gallery 1957, Accra, Ghana, 2021; and Ideas of Utopia, Absent Artists, Near Heaven, Charleston, East Sussex, UK, 2022.
