The headquarters of the African Union in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, completed in 2011, was a gift from the Peoples Republic of China to the peoples of Africa. The building is conceived as an icon of the African Union’s progression and unity of purpose, symbolizing the identity, independence, stabilization, rejuvenation, and peace of the continent’s independent nations. The Grand Conference Hall is located at the centre of the complex to emphasise the importance of inclusion, discussion, cooperation and communication between nations. The public areas are clad with indigenous African stone and woods. The garden between the old and the new African Union buildings hosts indigenous plant species from each of Africa’s 54 countries.
